Understanding behaviour, mental health and therapeutic communication.

Department of Psychology & Basic Psychiatry

The Department of Psychology & Basic Psychiatry introduces the scientific study of behaviour and the foundations of mental-health care. Students examine sensation, perception, attention, learning, memory, intelligence, motivation, emotion, personality, development, social behaviour and individual differences. The syllabus also addresses stress, adjustment, mental hygiene, counselling principles and major categories of psychological and psychiatric disorders. Emphasis is placed on therapeutic communication, respectful interviewing, stigma reduction, recognition of risk and the limits of non-specialist care. The department connects psychological knowledge with yoga, relaxation and lifestyle support while making clear that serious mental illness, suicidality, psychosis and complex disorders require qualified mental-health assessment and treatment.
