Understanding how body systems maintain homeostasis, respond to stress and adapt to activity.
Department of Physiology
The Department of Human Physiology explains the normal functions and integrated regulation of the human body. The BNYS syllabus covers the cell, blood and immunity, nerve and muscle, cardiovascular and respiratory physiology, digestion, renal function, endocrine regulation, reproduction, temperature control, the central and autonomic nervous systems and special senses. Students also examine physiological adaptation to exercise, altitude, environmental change and stress—knowledge that is central to the responsible study of yoga, fasting, hydrotherapy and other naturopathy interventions. Laboratory and clinical demonstrations develop skills in haematology, blood pressure measurement, pulse examination, electrocardiography, spirometry, respiratory assessment, temperature recording and neurological examination. The department trains students to distinguish normal variation from abnormal findings and to interpret physiological responses using scientific reasoning.
Students Learning Outcomes
✔ Learn normal function and regulation of all major body systems
✔ Measure and interpret selected physiological parameters safely
✔ Relate exercise, breath, fasting and environmental stress to physiological adaptation
✔ Recognise findings that fall outside normal physiological limits and require clinical evaluation
