Grounding yogic practice in classical texts, historical understanding and disciplined personal training.
Department of Philosophy & Practice of Yoga
The Department of Philosophy & Practice of Yoga introduces yoga as a historical, philosophical and practical discipline. Students examine definitions of yoga, its development from Vedic and Upanishadic traditions through the epics, classical systems and the work of Patanjali, as well as later and contemporary developments. The department places yoga in dialogue with Sankhya, Buddhism, Jainism and major paths such as Jnana, Bhakti, Karma and Raja Yoga. Practical training develops a disciplined foundation in asana, pranayama, cleansing practices, relaxation and meditation. Students learn rules, precautions and progressive methods of practice rather than treating techniques as isolated exercises. By integrating textual study with regular personal practice, the department prepares students for later subjects in physical culture and yoga therapy and cultivates professional respect for the philosophical depth, ethical context and experiential nature of yoga.
