Developing scientific understanding of microorganisms, immunity, infection and prevention.
Department of Microbiology
The Department of Microbiology introduces microorganisms of medical importance and their relationship to infection, immunity and public health. Students study general microbiology, sterilisation, disinfection, culture methods and the principles of host defence before progressing to systemic bacteriology, parasitology, virology and mycology. Applied microbiology includes normal flora, the laboratory approach to meningitis, urinary and respiratory infections, gastroenteritis, pyogenic and urogenital infections, infections of the ear, eye and oral cavity, nosocomial infection and the bacteriology of water, milk and air. Practical teaching demonstrates media, staining, culture characteristics, biochemical and serological tests, immunological interpretation, stool examination and blood-smear identification.
